Flannel originated in Wales where it was originally made from wool. The wool is spun, woven and felted to become a warm and comfortable fabric. It is a high quality fabric. Nowadays, most of the time, flannel is made from combed cotton. The result may not be as warm but it is still a fabric that is pleasant to the touch and beautiful to look at. Flannel only appeared in clothing at the beginning of the 20th century, it is used for clothes worn in summer and by the sea. Its softness and comfort make it a perfect fabric for your bed. It's harder to find than classic cotton sheets, but winter nights in this material are well worth a little thorough research.
Why choose flannel sheets?
The cotton in flannel has been scraped off, giving it a slightly fluffy feel that is very pleasant to the touch. A flannel bed set is very durable and comfortable, and is ideal for warming up under the duvet in winter. In addition to its comfort, the fabric once colored has a way to take the color. The colours of the flannel give the fabric a very pleasant matt appearance.
How to wash flannel sheets?
Cotton flannel is easy to care for, it can be machine washed at 40°C on a gentle programme so as not to damage the fabric. It is not advised to put your flannel sheets in the tumble dryer, otherwise the fabric will shrink. For wool flannel, it is better to take it to the dry cleaner, as wool is very fragile and has a strong tendency to shrink.
Where to buy flannel sheets?
Flannel is not an easy material to find, its weaving requires a process that makes this fabric relatively rare. However some brands like La Redoute, or retailers specializing in quality bed linen sell flannel sheets.
